GaN-based reference design shrinks motor drives

A 3-phase BLDC motor drive inverter board, the EPC9176 from EPC, employs a GaN energy stage to allow smaller, extra environment friendly motor drives. The event board options the EPC23102 ePower Stage IC, which integrates a gate driver and each high-side and low-side GaN FETs with typical on-resistance of 5.2 mΩ. This GaN-on-silicon totally built-in energy stage gives larger efficiency in a smaller footprint with decreased design effort necessities for quick time to market.

The EPC9176 demo board operates from an enter provide voltage between 20 V and 80 V and delivers as much as 20 ARMS, 28 A peak. This voltage vary and energy stage make the EPC9176 helpful for a wide range of three-phase BLDC motor drive functions with 36-V to 80-V enter, together with e-scooters, e-bikes, energy instruments, drones, medical robots, and manufacturing unit automation.

The board accommodates all the mandatory features to assist an entire motor drive inverter together with gate drivers; regulated auxiliary energy rails for housekeeping provides, voltage, and temperature sense; correct present sense; and safety features. EPC additionally gives the EPC9147A interface board to function the inverter reference board with most typical motors.

Priced at $900, the EPC9176 reference design board is obtainable for supply from Digi-Key.
